PSA 9 to PSA 10: The Inspection

PSA 9 to PSA 10: The Inspection

The Plan

I will first illustrate the process of how I decide if it is worthwhile to regrade a card. PSA is currently 15$ a card, so that is the cost of the regrade, I will assess the price gain, the card's condition, and then make an assessment whether to grade it or not.  I am sending 9 cards back however, I am only going to cover 3 as examples to how the process is done.

The Guidelines

Centering matters, if its not in 60/40, don’t even try for a 10.
Obvious whitening defects, anything more than dots, don't even try for a 10.
As a rule of thumb, if there are 2 defects on a card it can still get a 10. So what is a defect?
  • Each spec of whitening on the back edges
  • Any holo scratching
Anything obviously not a 10 isn't a 10 but with PSA there is definitely grey area. so that is what we are trying to exploit.

1st Edition Blaine's Moltres Holo - Gym Heroes

PSA 9 ~ $350
PSA 10 ~ $4200
Potential Gain ~ $3850
Look at this card, this is easily on the Mount Rushmore of my collection, I pulled it myself, it has a beautiful flamethrower swirl, come on. With this particular card the stakes are high as there is substantial price gain if the regrade is successful. So lets analyze this card's front, holo, and back and assess the chance of a successful regrade.

Front

  • No Obvious Defects
  • The centering little thick on the bottom

Holo

  • No Scratches
  • No Print Lines
  • Absolutely Perfect Holo

Back

  • 2 Nics Bottom Left

Verdict

If PSA lets the centering go as 10 worthy the 2 nics can be the 2 defects on a good day for a grader, with the amount of price gain possible, this is worth sending. If no 10, I feel confident it will get another 9 at least.

1st Edition Dark Charization Holo - Team Rocket

PSA 9 ~ $715

PSA 10 ~ $3300

Potential Gain ~ $2585

This card speaks for itself, etched into every collector's mind, the potential gain and collection goals are there for this one.

Front

  • Centering is well within 60/40
  • Top right corner is shaped a little oddly
  • No Scratches
  • No Print Lines
  • Absolutely Perfect Holo

BACK

  • 2 Nics Bottom Left

Verdict

The 2 nics can be the 2 defects on a good day for a grader, with the amount of price gain possible, this is worth sending. If no 10, I feel confident it will get another 9 at least.

>;)

1st Edition Erika's Dragonair - Gym Heroes

PSA 9 ~ $195

PSA 10 ~ $720

Potential Gain ~ $525

The fact Dragonair isn't a final evolution does it a disservice, I have always loved this card, I pulled it myself and I want a 10, yes no lie.

FRONT

  • No Obvious Defects
  • The centering little thick on the bottom

HOLO

Stunning and perfect Holo

BACK

  • 1 TINY Nic Top Right

Verdict

If they let the centering go as 10 worthy the 1 nic can be the and the frankly missable scratch this card fits in the criteria of 2 defects or less. With the amount of price gain possible being more than 3x, this is worth sending. If no 10, I feel confident it will get another 9 at least.
